Be Cheap Without Looking The Part

One of the biggest “excuses” I hear women in general say about their lack of fashion is that they simply don’t have the money to look nice all the time. Sure they’ll splurge on a dress for a nice wedding once every 3 years or so, and they may even buy a full suit for an interview or promotion opportunity, but when it comes to day-to-day clothing what’s the point in spending hundreds of dollars when you’re just going to get apple juice, spit-up, and various other sticky concoctions from your children on it? My secret: you don’t.

I think it’s important to look nice. While it’s not the most important trait for a person to carry, how you carry yourself in public reflects on how the world treats you, and you can argue that it’s absurd, but it’s a cold fact that regardless how dumb some might find it, isn’t going away. I think it’s important for children to see you put an effort in the way you approach the world, I also want my son to think I’m the most beautiful person on earth, so I always try to look my best, and I certainly don’t have Nicole Richie’s disposable income.

I thrift a lot, I have the RetailMeNot app on my phone which I always am able to check for coupons in each store I enter with, and I also use the Wrapp app, where brands put up free stuff you can send to your friends then they reciprocate the favor to you (I mainly use this for the free $6 H&M gift). I never spend more than $20 on a top, or $30 for bottoms/dresses, but more often than not all my outfits average about $20 total or less. Here are a few of my favorite new pieces, and what I spent on them…

All of these outfits are perfect for summer, and currently in stores so it’s really easy to re-create these looks for yourself!

Starting off with one of my favorite looks, dark wash denim, which everyone should already own, cuffed and paired them my new striped tank top which I got 2/$10 with $6 off Wrapp Gift at H&M (all their basics are always mix&match 2/$10 so the striped skirt in the next ensemble plus this shirt were $4 total). I accessorized with a tropical-inspired beaded necklace (Frannies $5.98), woven Nine West sandals which I snagged at Ross for $10, and a vintage clutch I got from my Great-Grandmother’s house. Not including the Jeans, this outfit was $17.

Using the other half of my mix&match 2/$10 (in actuality I ended up spending $2 on the skirt) I scored this navy&white striped tube skirt, these tend to fit a little more tight than I care for, so I paired it with my favorite new baggy tee shirt from The Limited (it was on sale 50% off making it $15) for a fun pattern-on-pattern look, perfect with these $6 Nine West flats from Ross, and accessories I already owned! Total Spent on this one: $23

Another outfit using a similar basic skirt from H&M which I again only paid $2 for, this one has a wider stripe thats black&white, I paired an $11 Forever 21 sleep shirt with it, and again used all already-owned shoes & accessories making this cute look only $13!!!!

Last but certainly not least since this was a tad pricier than the rest, I had been gifted a Target gift card recently or I wouldn’t have splurged like this but I got this awesome chambray button down ($15), these super-comfy striped shorts ($12), and these cool sandals ($12), I also used my cartwheel app to get an extra 25% off the shorts and 15% off summer sandals!! This is my favorite outfit for summer, it’s easy to wear while chasing around babies, and it’s adorable! In total I spent $33 on this outfit, and I’ll use each piece in many different ways throughout the year!
