October means Fall is in full effect and I could not be more excited about it. With all the fun festivals, pumpkin patches, and flavors to enjoy this season it can be hard to pick a favorite fall activity, but my favorite thing about fall (aside from the PSL) is hands down fall fashion. The deep rich colors of fall paired with amazing textures and fun layers is a kind of style that I live for, and I wanted to share my excitement with my mother, by showing her how to rock some of my seasonal favs on her own.
My mother who was born and raised in Florida, admittedly has a hard time dressing for the season and not the weather down here. With highs still in the 90s wearing anything other than a tank top can be downright excruciating, but there’s just something slightly off about going on a hayride in a pair of cut-off shorts. Recently my mother has dropped a ton of weight and I could not be more proud of her for putting her health first, so I decided to give my mom a little fall makeover to show her exactly how to appropriately dress for the season AND the weather.
To kick off the makeover, we HAD to cover her gray hair. I always joke around with her about being “old” but the truth is aside from those grays she’s a VERY youthful looking grandmother. At one point it was actually kind of annoying in high school when people kept asking if we were sisters, ha! Her hair has ALWAYS been this deep deep brown shade, so I thought it would be fun to mix things up and add a little tint of red to it. We went with Schwarzkopf Color Ultime in Black Cherry. Since her hair is coarse she often has a difficult time getting color to stick, but Schwarzkopf Color Ultime defies fading for up to 9 weeks for long lasting color.
My mother was in love with how fresh her color stayed and the fun fashionable color options we had to choose from. Since her hair is naturally very dark, we were unsure we’d have much of a difference, but Schwarzkopf Color Ultime gave us true to box color results. Her rich dark hair has the slightest tint of deep burgundy, the perfect shade for fall, and the process was SO simple!
First I prepared the hair color by squeezing the color cream into the color developer and shaking it well.
Then I divided my mother’s hair into 4 sections, and began to apply the color to her hair, saturating it throughly from root to tip. Her hair is incredibly long and thick, so to be sure the entirety of it was saturated with color, we used 2 boxes for this coloring session.
After the hair was saturated, I gathered it all together and lifted it off her shoulders so the color wouldn’t bleed over anything. After 25 minutes she showered it out and applied the Intense Color Conditioner for 3 minutes. This conditioner made her freshly colored hair super soft and smelled amazing, like salon quality conditioners do.
The hair color results were AMAZING. My mom couldn’t stop looking in the mirror and playing with her locks, she’s in love with how soft and vibrant her hair still is to this day!
The next part of our makeover, was the clothes. Rocking skinny jeans and perforated suede booties is a perfect base for any fall outfit, so we added a cream bell sleeve top to make the look a little more on-trend for Fall ’17. If you haven’t noticed a detailed sleeve is all the rage right now, and bell sleeves are breezy, so they don’t feel like too much on a hot day. I love layering things in the fall, but with this weather it’s not like we can walk around in jackets or sweaters, so this awesome olive utility vest is a great layering staple for warmer climates, plus the amount of versatility the vest offers makes it an incredible wardrobe staple. While it looks great over tops with jeans, it’s also an amazing addition to a simple shirtdress and even looks great over a button-down and pencil skirt for a fun workwear outfit. We also found this amazing layered choker which is a great accessory for any and all fall outfits. I love the way the sparkles in the choker contrast with the black suede, giving the necklace a little edge.
Finally, to finish the perfect fall look, I did my mom’s make-up. We used dark browns and rich gold tones in her eyeshadow, a nice mauve on her lips, and a great slightly shimmering bronzer to warm her face up a bit. Seeing my Mom look so amazing was a reward itself to me, but seeing her be SO happy about how she looked, a woman who has always had confidence issues, was a truly priceless moment for me, and something she’s deserved all her life! This was an amazing mother-daughter experience for both of us, I’d definitely recommend a makeover day for anyone looking to surprise mom for a birthday or holiday with a truly memorable gift.
